NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting (ILT)

Course Overview

This is a beginner firearm safety class - not a marksmanship course!  We recommend this class for those who are new to firearm or have limited experience. Extensive training and in-depth safety principles are stressed including the NRA rules for safe gun handling. This objective-based class offers instruction in all facets of firearm ownership including safe gun handling, parts and components, operations, ammunition, maintenance, basic stances and shooting techniques.  Continued opportunities for skill development is discussed.   Firearm (or rental package), 50 round of factory ammunition, eye & ear protection (prescription eyewear acceptable), and a positive attitude required.  Upon successfully passing this course, students will meet NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting (ILT) national standards and will receive an official certificate of completion.  Approximately 8 hours including 50 rounds live fire training.

 

*This is a prerequisite for more advanced NRA Student Courses as well as NRA Pistol Instructor Certification (see "Become an Instructor" page for more information).

 

**This class meets some state's minimum requirements to applying for a concealed carry permit (see your local Concealed Carry Department for more information).

NRA Personal Protection in the Home (PPITH)

Course Overview

Students who register for the NRA Personal Protection in the Home (PPITH) class are interested in protecting their family, home, and surroundings. This is an advanced concept course.  It is required that all students have attended and successfully passed the NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting Class. This objective based class take you beyond the normal operations of a firearm into when and how you can use your firearm to protect your residence, creating a "safe room", strategies for personal defense, how to discourage thieves, preventing unauthorized use of home firearm, controlling residential confrontations, home defense laws, shooting techniques for accuracy, and interacting with the police after an incident.  Handgun, 100 round of factory ammunition, eye & ear protection (prescription eyewear acceptable), and a positive attitude required.  Upon successfully passing this course, students will meet NRA Personal Protection in the Home national standards and will receive an official certificate of completion.  Approximately 8 hours including live fire training.

 

*This is course is also a prerequisite for NRA Personal Protection in the Home Instructor Certification (see "Become an Instructor" page for more information).

Course Overview

Students who register for the NRA Personal Protection Outside the Home (PPOTH) - Advanced class are interested in protecting themselves and their family while in public. This is a comprehensive concealed carry concept course.  It is required that all students have attended and successfully passed the NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting class and NRA Personal Protection in the Home course. This objective based class teaches the gun owner how to develop a defensive mindset and use it to your advantage, differences between cover and concealment, basic tactical reloading and defensive shooting techniques, the correct way to hold an attacker at gunpoint, dealing with the police after an incident and the aftermath of a shooting, holstering options for maximum efficiency, essential skill building techniques, Laws related to concealed carry, how to travel across state lines with your firearm and handling traffic stops.  Handgun, holster, 200 round of factory ammunition, eye & ear protection (prescription eyewear acceptable), and a positive attitude required.  Upon successfully passing this course, students will meet NRA Personal Protection Outside the Home national standards and will receive an official certificate of completion.  Approximately 14 hours including live fire training.

This is an introductory firearm safety class.  This class was developed for Homeowners and  First Responders, or anyone who wants to learn to safely handle and secure a firearm while in a residential setting.  This class teaches the NRA's 3 Rules of Safe Gun Handling, primary causes of firearm accidents, safely unloading a variety of action types, handling ammunition, firearm cleaning & maintenance, and safe storage options. Continued opportunities for skill development is discussed.  A willingness to learn and a positive attitude required.  Upon successfully passing this course, students will meet NRA Home Firearm Safety national standards and will receive an official certificate of completion.  Approximately 4 hours (non-shooting course).

NRA Personal Protection in the Home (PPITH)

NRA Personal Protection Outside the Home (PPOTH) - Advanced

The NRA Defensive Pistol course extends the student's knowledge beyond NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting and NRA Personal Protection Outside the Home to apply additional ADVANCED Defensive Shooting Strategies   This objective based course is held entirely at the range and includes one and two handed shooting drills, shooting from multiple positions including in-motion, challenging target requirements, timed shooting events, low-light conditions (when available), using a backup firearm, practice of personal defense strategies to regain control of a stolen firearm, basic close combat techniques, tactical reloading.  Handgun, holster, 300 rounds of factory ammunition, eye & ear protection (prescription eyewear acceptable), and a positive attitude required.  Upon successfully passing this course, students will meet NRA Personal Protection Outside the Home national standards and will receive an official certificate of completion.  Approximately 6 hours.

 

*Great for those interested in basic active shooter survival tactics, church & school awareness, defensive strategies to maximize survival.

NRA Range Safety Officer (RSO)

The NRA Range Safety Officer (RSO) certification program was developed in response to the demand for a nationally-recognized range safety officer certification.  NRA Range Safety Officers possess the knowledge, skills, and attitude essential to organizing, conducting, and supervising safe shooting activities and range operations.  This includes conducting a range inspections, enforce range rules, clear stoppages and malfunctions, conduct safety briefings, and understand and control emergency procedures.  Students must pass their RSO Exam with a 90% or better in order to earn their official NRA credential rating.  Approximately 9 hours (non-shooting course).

 

*This is course is also a prerequisite for NRA Chief Range Safety Officer (CRSO)  Instructor Certification (see "Become an Instructor" page for more information).

 

**This course does not encompass the functions and responsibilities of a Range Officer, who conducts NRA competition shooting events as defined by Rule 11.5 of the NRA Rule Books.
